Chapter Nineteen

“So, it was a bear?” Renna said, looking over the damaged outer walls of the chicken coop. She asked the question slowly, her words doused in skepticism. I could see the doubt plain on her blunt dwarven features.

Rock, the heavyset sprite with the yellow hat, had managed to fix the dents and scratches to the tin roof, and the arrows had all been removed, but there wasn’t anything to be done about the claw marks that glided along the sides of the outer walls. Overall, the coop looked horrendous. It hadn’t been in the best condition before, but today it looked like it had gone through a woodchipper and then been hastily reassembled.

I swallowed hard, nodding. “That’s my best guess. I don’t think anything else could’ve made those scratches.” A sense of foreboding settled in the pit of my stomach as I said it, flashbacks of the grotesque deer creature running through my mind. I knew exactly what had made those scratches. In fact, it had almost killed me. Technically though, a bear had been involved, so it wasn’t an outright lie. Renna leaned closer to the wall of the coop, scrutinizing the claw marks.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before. That must’ve been some bear.” She placed extra emphasis on the last word while casting a sidelong glance in my direction.

“Yeah. Probably. It was dark—so I didn’t get a good look.” I said the words a little too quickly. I could feel the blood draining from my face, and the weight of Renna's scrutinizing gaze made me acutely aware that she saw through my lie. I tried to sound convincing, but my own voice rang hollow in my ears.

“You know,” Renna said, “you should consider getting yourself a donkey, they’re really good at chasing off bears.” Her attention shifted from me back to the coop.

I felt my eyebrows furrow at her advice. “I'll have to look into that. I guess I can start getting animals now that the barn is cleared.” The thought made me uneasy. How could I bring animals to this property knowing what was just a few paces away, lurking in the forest. I seriously doubted a donkey could’ve chased off that beast from last night. It would have made a good appetizer for the monster, and I would have been the main course. I gulped again, trying to push away thoughts of what I’d seen. The rabbit I’d encountered when I first came here seemed like a normal animal compared to that antlered monstrosity. The wolf that had attacked me a couple weeks ago had looked like a normal wolf, albeit infected with rabies or mange. But the monster from last night was bizarre, disjointed—a hodgepodge of several different animal types. Was it related to the level of corruption in the land? Were my plants the cause?

“I’m glad you weren’t hurt. It seems like it was quite aggressive.” Renna walked back to her wagon and grabbed her tools. Today was the day she was
